Is telepractice the right fit for my family?

As a speech-language pathologist, my main objective is to offer effective and easily accessible treatment options for my clients. I am particularly enthusiastic about telepractice speech treatment, which allows me to provide speech therapy services remotely using technology. This method, also referred to as teletherapy or telehealth, has proven to be highly effective for many reasons. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has recognized telepractice as an appropriate service delivery model for speech-language intervention. Using telepractice to provide speech-language services offers several benefits, including increased accessibility to care and the ability to provide services in a more efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner (Coufal et al., 2018; Smith et al., 2003).

Accessibility of Services

A systematic review of telehealth studies found that over 85% of studies showed the advantages of telehealth over non-telehealth options (Molini-Avejonas et al., 2015). Additionally, there is a shortage of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who can provide speech-language services in schools, particularly in rural areas (ASHA, 2018, 2020; Edgar & Rosa-Lugo, 2007). Telepractice can help extend services to remote, rural, and underserved populations, lessening personnel and geographic constraints and providing children with better access to speech-language services (Coufal et al., 2018; Tucker, 2012). This means that children who might not normally receive services can do so via telepractice. Telepractice also allows for consistent care even in situations where in-person sessions are not possible, such as during bad weather or unexpected events. This uninterrupted care is essential for maintaining progress in clients' speech development and preventing regression. Importantly, families who receive telepractice services are often very satisfied with the services they receive (Gabel et al., 2013).

Convenient, Personalized,
and Engaging

Telepractice provides convenience and flexibility, allowing clients to engage in therapy sessions from the comfort of their own homes. This reduces scheduling conflicts and eliminates the need for travel, making it ideal for busy families and individuals with packed schedules. By integrating therapy into their daily routines, it becomes easier to commit to consistent and regular sessions, which is essential for achieving optimal progress and successful outcomes.

Personalized treatment is made possible through videoconferencing and interactive tools, enabling me to assess speech patterns and provide targeted interventions in real time. Parents and caregivers can also participate in therapy sessions, gaining valuable knowledge of techniques and strategies used. This involvement leads to greater carryover of therapy techniques in the client's natural environment, resulting in improved progress and skill generalization.

Telepractice can enhance the engagement and motivation of clients, particularly children, during therapy sessions. Interactive technology platforms, educational games, visual aids, and exercises customized to the client's interests and preferences can make therapy sessions enjoyable and engaging. This active involvement and pleasure lead to better engagement and more effective treatment outcomes.

To put it simply, telepractice speech treatment is a great option because it allows for treatment without being limited by location, offers flexibility and convenience, allows for personalized treatment, encourages engagement and motivation, ensures consistent care, and is backed by research. I strongly believe that telepractice can positively impact on my clients' lives by providing accessible, top-notch speech therapy services that help them reach their communication goals.
